This first article explains why it has become essential.

1. The "four new trends" have turned cars from machines into always-on smart terminals

Electrification, intelligence, connectivity, and sharing have transformed the car from an isolated machine into a permanently connected smart terminal. Behind that convenience lies a complex digital ecosystem: the vehicle is no longer a closed mechanical system, but a node in a digital network that can be reached at any time.

2. The attack surface is expanding exponentially

Vehicle electronics used to be largely confined to the CAN bus and hard to reach from outside. Today the situation is entirely different:

More open interfaces:T-Boxes, smart cockpits, and autonomous driving domain controllers expose a growing number of external interfaces;

More connectivity:Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 4G/5G have broken physical isolation — attacks can now arrive remotely;

More nodes:a single smart vehicle carries far more ECUs and far more code than ever before, and any weak point can become an entry point.

The conclusion is blunt:anything that can connect to the internet can be attacked.

3. The consequences are about lives, not just data

Unlike traditional IT security, automotive cybersecurity failures play out in the physical world:

An attack can causeloss of vehicle control, directly endangering occupants and pedestrians;

It canleak private data, including owner location history, voice recordings, and camera images;

It can turnvehicles into vectorsfor malware, causing large-scale traffic disruption or even accidents.

This is exactly why automotive cybersecurity is regulated as a standalone mandatory requirement rather than folded into ordinary information security management.

4. Global regulation is tightening across the board — compliance is now a market access prerequisite

European Union:UN R155 (cybersecurity) and UN R156 (software updates) are now mandatory prerequisites for new vehicle types entering the EU market, and OEMs must establish a CSMS (cyber security management system) and pass an audit;

China:mandatory national standards such as GB 44495, Technical requirements for vehicle cybersecurity, have been issued and implemented, while the Provisions on the Management of Automotive Data Security set explicit constraints on cross-border data transfer;

EU CRA (Cyber Resilience Act):a horizontal regulation for products with digital elements, imposing lifecycle security requirements on automotive electronics exported to the EU.

For how these regulations relate to one another, see our article "GB 44495 and UN R155: The Dual-Compliance Guide for Domestic and Export Markets".

5. ISO/SAE 21434 answers the "how" question

Regulations tell companies what they must do — they do not tell them how. ISO/SAE 21434 is the world's first international standard for road vehicle cybersecurity engineering. It provides a standardized, practical engineering framework covering the full lifecycle from concept and development through operation to decommissioning, and can be summarized in four characteristics:

Full lifecycle coverage:it defines security activities from concept definition and product development through manufacturing, operations, and decommissioning, leaving no gaps;

Risk-driven:it starts from risk assessment to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities, and drives the definition and verification of cybersecurity goals so that risk stays under control;

Aligned with functional safety:it works in concert with ISO 26262 to deliver combined cybersecurity and functional safety assurance;

A foundation for regulatory compliance:it satisfies the technical expectations of regulations such as UNECE WP.29 R155 and serves as key technical evidence for vehicle type approval and market compliance

In one sentence:adopting ISO 21434 is not just following a technical standard — it means building a methodology for engineering intelligent vehicles safely and compliantly.

More in This Series

ISO 21434 Deep Dive (2): Building Organizational Cybersecurity Management (Clause 5)

ISO 21434 Deep Dive (3): Project-Level Management and Supplier Collaboration (Clauses 6 & 7)

ISO 21434 Deep Dive (4): Continuous Cybersecurity After Start of Production (Clause 8)

ISO 21434 Deep Dive (5): The Eight-Step TARA Process and Four Risk Treatment Options (Clause 15)

ISO 21434 Deep Dive (6): Concept Phase, Cybersecurity Goals, and CAL (Clause 9)

Need Compliance Support?

Is your company working towards ISO 21434 / CSMS compliance?
